Learning A Language

There comes a time in someone’s life, when they decide to learn a language.  Languages can be a lot of fun to learn, but challenging at the same time.  What’s the best way to go about it?

Many companies offer courses on speaking a foreign language.  But is this really the best way to learn?  Sure, they might offer Voice, Visual, and Hands On learning, but is Software really the best way to learn a language?

What about College course material?  Many Colleges offer and even require one to learn a foreign language, or two, or three, etc.  Depending on your degree.  But is College really the best way to learn?

Perhaps the best way to learn a foreign language, is to immerse yourself into the culture.  What Culture?  Well, the culture who’s language you want to learn.  If you want to learn Japanese, you’ll need to immerse yourself in Japanese Culture.  The only way to do that?  Go to Japan.

Why is Total Immersion important?  The thing is, software and audio courses can only get you so far.  In other words, you might be learning how to pronounce a word, but what if you’re not accurate?  People might look at you funny when you’re trying to speak to them.

Some languages, like Chinese, are tone regulated.  In other words, the tone that you speak in, may actually mean an entirely different word/phrase.  Most of the time though, it’s usually different ways of saying something.  Like we have different levels of love, they might have different tones for love.

So, rather than make a fool of yourself, you might want to consider taking an immersion course, or even just traveling on your own.  It’s never too late to travel and you may as well do it while you’re still young.

For those of us who can’t quite afford to travel, at least yet, there is always the courses to use.  I for one find myself having trouble learning certain words, so I have no clue if I’m right with the pronunciation or not.  What about you?  What’s your biggest challenge when learning a foreign language?

It’s All About Initiative

Life in general is all about Initiative.  Do you have the drive necessary to make it happen?  Are you living life the way you want to?

I’ve started writing on my novel again.  That takes initiative.  If you have a story you want to write, you need to plan it out and get started writing.  Don’t wait too long, you’ll never get it done.  Trust me, I know.

I’ve had the idea to write this novel for several years now.  I could have been a published Author by now if I had that Initiative.  Hopefully, it won’t be that far off, now that I’ve started the initial stage.

There’s another area in my life that needs work though.  Exercise.  I just lack the drive that I need to make it all happen.

I often find my self laughing (on the inside) at people who drive around the parking lot looking for a parking space.  I can park out of the way at the end of the isle and walk into the store, before most people can park their car.  Seriously?  Yet, at the same time, I lack the drive to get motivated for exercise?

So, here’s what I’m going to try.  I’m going to make a poster board.  It’s going to be filled with things I want, people I want to be like, women I’d like to date, etc.  Why?  This is to hopefully give me the motivation I need to actually be someone.  To get up and go.

I’m also going to be starting a community of my own.  I’m going to be looking for certain individuals (who are already well on their way) to help jump start the community.  If you’d like to be a part of this community, let me know.  It will probably be forum based.

Keep plucking away at life and it will reward you.

Birthday Songs – Ewe

Today is my 30th Birthday and having dinner at any restaurant is usually interesting on this day.  You know what I mean, they come out with a piece of Birthday Cake and sing that little annoying song.

Ok, the Happy Birthday song, isn’t annoying.  Just to get that clear.  I’m talking about the song they sing at the restaurant.  Happy happy birthday, happy happy birthday, happy happy birthday, happy happy birthday.  You know the one.  That catchy, but annoying one that makes you embarrassed to be there.

The funny thing is, we were at Applebees the night before and someone had a birthday in the booth right behind us.  I was like, oh no, that song again.  Even when it’s not your birthday, it makes you smile and blush.  All I have to say is WTF?

I was going to ask the waitress at Outback, what they offered for Birthdays.  My mother told me I could always tell her it’s your Birthday, but they’ll come out and sing that song.  I answered right away, “No, absolutely not.  That’s just down right embarrassing.”

Needless to say, I didn’t have a Birthday song, nor did I have a piece of Cake.  Personally, I don’t like Birthday Cake on my Birthday.  If it’s another Birthday, I’m usually fine with eating a slice of Cake.  I”d rather have a tasty Cheesecake instead, with strawberries and whip cream on top.

I decided to not get the Cheesecake either.  My mother was like, “for the whole $4 (for the slice), I could make you a whole Cheesecake.”  So, I’m sure you know what I opted for.  I’d rather have a whole Cheesecake than a slice any day and no one makes them better than my mom does.  That’s I’ve found yet.

With that, I hope your birthday is just as eventful.  Joking around about silly birthday songs  and what ever else you can find to joke about.  And may you get a whole Cheesecake on your Birthday to celebrate.

Happy Halloween

This post is to wish you all a Happy Halloween.  As of this writing, it’s currently October 31, 2011 at 5:47pm EST.

I was told by a friend that there was this guy running around in his car with a loud speaker, telling everyone that Halloween is Devil Worshiping.  Obviously, this guy knows nothing about Halloween.

First off, if you know anything about Halloween, then you know that Halloween is a Seasonal Festival.  In other words, Halloween represents Harvest time, the changing of Fall to Winter, and even Honors the dead.

OMG, But honoring the dead is a form of Devil worshiping.  On the contrary, “Honoring the Dead,” is a tradition that has been followed for many thousands of years.  Well beyond the years of Christ based Religion or Jewish religion for that matter.  Honoring the Dead merely means you’re paying tribute to them, for being there.  Much like families visiting gravestones of loved ones.

So, you can’t say that Halloween is Devil Worshiping.  That’s just a stupid notion brought up by some idiot, who thinks he’s right and wants to cause trouble.

One thing we need to realize as Human beings, is that no matter how hard you try, no two people are ever alike.  As long as there are two people on the face of the planet, you’ll always have arguments, fights, and the likes.  It is possible to get along without physically getting into a fight, but you’re still going to have fighting.

It’s the ability to set aside differences and exist, that make us unique.  So, set them aside and enjoy your Halloween.  Honor the dead tonight.  Visit a graveyard and pay respect.  Have fun and stay safe.

Heaven Is A Place On Earth

This classic song makes me want to dance.  One of the best all time classics, Heaven is a place on Earth, is an all round great song.  Just listen to the lyrics.  You’ll be glad you did.  Life is too short not to enjoy.  Get rid of the drama and bring on the music.  This Earth is what you make it.  Life is what you make it.  So, make it heaven.

Kona’s Korner

You might be wondering what the heck Kona’s Korner is?  It’s nothing more than another Gamer site.  Well, not exactly just another gaming site.

His reviews range from Orcs Must Die to Modern Warfare.

The site itself is very well designed.  A clean look, easy on the eyes and well laid out.

The latest post on the site can be found here.

On Hold

Well, this bites.  Another piece of my computer is falling apart.  Yep, my DVD Burner is going bad.  What’s the deal?

Some of you may remember my first piece of software to test and review was supposed to be Encyclopedia Britannica.  Yep, that failed.  I took back the software to Staples, only to get a replacement that had the same issue.  I tried installing another game, Sim City 4, which also happened to be a failed attempt.

So, I tried a few things.  Took apart the DVD Burner and cleaned the lens.  After putting it back together, no success.  Grrr.  It was a pain to take apart to begin with.

Updating the firmware was a big failure too.  I had to go through a site that wasn’t the official site of LiteOn, which is the DVD Burner manufacturer.  Maybe that had something to do with it, but hey, was worth a try.  Doesn’t do LiteOn any good to not be able to update the firmware.

The last thing I did was delete the register keys, uninstall the driver, and reboot.  Nope, notta.  Yet another failure.  At this point the frustration is building.  So, I tried one last thing.

Instead of a CD-Rom game that I had, I tried one of the DVD-Rom games I had.  Spore was the choice of game.  Put it in the drive……  Success.  The DVD was recognized and I was able to install the game.  My first review, just might be of Spore.

After reading a few forum post, from tech forums, I’ve come to the conclusion that my DVD Burner is on its last leg.  Going to have to get a new one, but I’m not sure when that will be.

I now have two options.  Continue with Spore and check out some free games online.  Yes, free fits the Budget category.  Or put the whole budget games and software route on hold.  I know though that’s not what you want, so I’ll be checking out games online that I can download and what not.  Stay tuned.

Budget Games and Software

I will be reviewing some Budget Games and Software in the coming weeks.  Most people are looking fun and good software on a budget.  What is my budget?  I’m limiting my purchases to $20.  You can expect a review on a budget product most Fridays.  Some weeks may be skipped, do to various factors.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover they say, but the cover is the selling point.  Instead, I’m going to say, “You shouldn’t judge a game/software by it’s price.”  Just because it’s budget, doesn’t mean it’s not a good game/software.  For example, you can now get Sim City 4 for $10.  That is one product I will review.

The product I will be reviewing up in the coming week is, Encyclopedia Britannica.  This information filled product is a bit more accurate than Wikipedia and I’ll be giving it a whirl over the next week.  When opinion matters, I’ll be giving you my two cents on Friday.  Stay tuned for that.

If you’d like to send me a free copy of your software to review, then I’d be happy to oblige.  The software must be a reason price and budget friendly.
